I'm curious how many of you keep some kind of (semi-)permanent sacred spaces in your home on the scale of a hof, temple, etc.

I'm feeling slightly inspired by Neokoroi to find out if there would be interest for something of a pan-recon group for people who keep sacred spaces for their Gods and spirits, especially if those spaces have some kind of public access.

(Of course I also postulate this when I currently have no such physical space of my own.)

Well, aside from my many shrines that are placed throughout my house, I do have an entire room set aside as an adyton, which was the innermost room of a temple in ancient Greece - I use it as a place to do oracles, spiritwork, etc. However, it is definitely not public, it is extremely private. If I had land, I would like to make some public shrines outdoors, but I don't know that it will ever happen. Though sometimes I build small shrines to the nymphs outdoors in public lands, and my idea is that someday other people might start visiting them too.

I do think your idea for a pan-recon group of temple keepers is great!

Thank you thank you. At the least it'd be nice to see some networking, like with the Neokoroi, hof keepers, and W'ab in the House of Netjer. Even if all the spaces aren't quite public, there's the underlying thread to what everyone's doing.

I have a shrine room that contains the state shrine I tend as a W'ab as well as my personal shrines. I've been toying with creating outdoor shrine areas as well, but I haven't yet had the oomph to get those off the ground. As for public access, as of right now it's HoN (or close personal acquaintance) only. (I've had a couple of HoN events at my house, but neither has really made use of the shrine room. It's kind of small for get-togethers.)

When we had the space we had a separate ritual room. Now... we live in the country and have the whole outdoors, so we have a number of shrines and sacred spaces outside. Indoors now the altars are in rooms that are also living spaces.

Other than my Stall, none. A big part changed when we got our present dog. What was once my ritual space under Oak,Pecan and Loquat is now a "puppy-bomb" filled space, no longer Ritually Clean. Where I used to do Rites is now a Taro patch....

I've got my altar, which is located on top of a hundred fifty year old shoeshine box that once belonged to my great-grandfather, it's devoted to Shiva and it felt right to do so; I have a lot of reverence for my ancestors for all of the fairly cool and impressive things they've done. Other than that, I've been working on a new fairy circle out in the sheep's field on a hill, but it's slow going because I have to be very selective in the stones I use, and in eventual location, since I won't be able to enter it when it's complete, a majority of the time. I don't want it to be in a place where it messes with the energy already moving around in the field either so I need to pick a spot where it makes the least noise, and isn't going to start disturbing the local critters or make the trees nervous, they've been here longer. We've got a grove of oak trees, and a very odd spot in the back of the field with a cottonwood tree and some half buried stones, and I think both are fairly sacred spaces, in that I feel a lot like a kid entering the main room of a church when I go back there.

The only thing that comes close to the scale of a temple/hof/etc is the walk-in closet I'm turning into an incubation chamber. I'll be doing my first ritual with it right about Samhain.

I have three altars; One dedicated to my patron, one that I use as a an Aztec would use a standard home altar and a magical altar in my bedroom. All three of them are treated differently depending on which one it is. All three of them are simple tables that are then outfitted accordingly.

My patron's altar is never seen by anybody except me. I'd be willing to let certain other practitioners see it, but images such as the one I have of Tlaloc generally weren't seen by just anybody. I plan on sculpting one of white marble that could be used for a more public ceremonial functions. It just wasn't cricket for main deity images to be shown off freely.

Now, a household altar, which every Aztec had, can be shown off because, heck, how you gonna hide it in a traditional one room house? On it you'd have smaller, "household" images and it would be used as needed. So that one could be public, but I don't see the point since every Aztec Recon would have something like this, but the Teteo on it would vary depending on the individual.

The most important thing when it comes to altars and sacred places of worship for the Aztecs was a separation of the sacred and the profane. Altars don't have to be fancy, but they should be permanent. In other words, even if you don't have every deity image on your household altar at once, or even if your moving it and don't have anything on it at a given time, you don't use it to just hold profane stuff. Ever.

I do have several public places I do rituals. I only go to these places when I intend to do a ritual, and only at the appropriate times of year. I picked these places based on geographic location reconstructed from various academic papers written about the Aztec use of sacred geography, which was, and still is, a core feature of the religion. However, I used where I live as the center reference point, beings as this is where I have my patron's altar set up. So the sacred geography is relative to me, but not to someone else. But they're welcome to visit these places if they'd like.
